چکیده
APRIL 2005 135 BUMC PROCEEDINGS 2005;18:134–137 Genetic counseling deals with the “human problems associated with the occurrence, or the risk of occurrence, of a genetic disorder in the family” (1). Genetic counseling is essentially a communication process—about medical facts, the contribution of heredity to certain conditions, the interpretation of test results, and the options available. It also involves supportive counseling to enable patients to make decisions and to make the best possible adjustment to the presence or risk of genetic disease. Genetic counselors have master’s degrees from certified programs and are certified by either the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling. This article reviews several case scenarios in order to highlight some themes and lessons from genetic counseling.

Analysis of CFTR Gene Mutations in Children with Cystic Fibrosis, First Report from North-East of Iran
Objective(s): More than 1500 registered mutations in cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene are responsible for dysfunction of an ion channel protein and a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This study was performed to investigate the frequency of a number of well-known CFTR mutations in North Eastern Iranian CF patients. Material and...
متن کاملImprovement in sensitivity of allele-specific PCR facilitates reliable noninvasive prenatal detection of cystic fibrosis.
BACKGROUND Cell-free fetal DNA circulating in maternal blood has potential as a safer alternative to invasive methods of prenatal testing for paternally inherited genetic alterations, such as cystic fibrosis (CF) mutations. METHODS We used allele-specific PCR to detect mutated CF D1152H DNA in the presence of an excess of the corresponding wild-type sequence. Pfx buffer (Invitrogen) containin...
متن کاملA cost-effectiveness analysis of prenatal carrier screening for cystic fibrosis.
OBJECTIVE To examine the cost-effectiveness of prenatal carrier screening for cystic fibrosis. METHODS A cost-benefit equation was developed that was based on the hypothesis that the cost of prenatal diagnosis required to diagnose and prevent one case of cystic fibrosis should be equal to or less than the lifetime cost generated from the birth of a neonate with cystic fibrosis. The formula wa...
متن کاملPrenatal maternal plasma DNA screening for cystic fibrosis: A computer modelling study of screening performance
Background: Prenatal cystic fibrosis (CF) screening is currently based on determining the carrier status of both parents. We propose a new method based only on the analysis of DNA in maternal plasma. Methods: The method relies on the quantitative amplification of the CF gene to determine the percentage of DNA fragments in maternal plasma at targeted CF mutation sites that carry a CF mutation. C...
متن کاملNovel CFTR Mutations in Two Iranian Families with Severe Cystic Fibrosis
Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a common autosomal recessive disorder that affects many body systems and is produced by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. CF is also the most frequently inherited disorder in the West. The aim of this study was to detect the mutations in the CFTR gene in two Iranian families with CF. Methods: After DNA extractio...
